Mobile Cranes and Their Application

Mobile cranes are of great use within many logistical applications. Designed to easily transport to a site, set up and operate with. A mobile crane can add a lot of value towards many logistical tasks.

Mobile cranes are hydraulic-powered cranes with a telescoping boom mounted on truck type carriers or as self-propelled models.

Mobile cranes can also be used with different types of load and cargo. This allows for the crane to be utilised for varied applications. Some examples of this include this type of crane being converted to a demolition crane by adding a demolition ball, or to an earth mover by adding a clamshell bucket or a dragline and scoop, although design details can limit their effectiveness.

Mobile cranes require little or no setup or assembly. This further adds to their application and effectiveness on logistical projects which tend to be focused on mobile operations.

Fatigue During Long Distance Driving

When driving for long periods of time, its recommended that certain safety precautions are carried out in order to avoid accidents. One of which is taking regular breaks on the road.

Fatigue is a factor of many reported accidents, and its something that can be easily maintained. Here are some tips to avoid becoming dangerously tired on the road:

  • Don’t drive for more than 8 hours in a day.
  • Don’t start a long  journey if you are tired.
  • Plan journeys so breaks can be taken.
  • Take regular fifteen minutes breaks in journeys over three hours.
  • Aim to stop every two hours or so.
  • If you begin to feel sleepy, stop in a safe place, remembering both personal and traffic risk. Do not stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway.
  • An effective way to counter sleepiness is to drink two cups of caffeinated coffee and to take a short nap of at least 15 minutes.

Storing Vehicles For Long Periods of Time

For whatever reason, vehicles are sometimes left stationary for long periods of time. However, vehicles are designed to be used on a regular basis. So doing just the opposite and leaving them unused, can actually cause damage to the vehicle.

This damage can be avoided by preparing the vehicle before storing it.

Cover The Exhaust

The exhaust is connected directly to inner mechanics of the vehicle. If a vehicle is left for a period of time, debris and even creatures can get into these inner workings, through holes like the exhaust. A simple plastic bag tied around the exhaust pipe will prevent this from happening.

If your vehicle has any large air intakes or ways to access the engine it can be worth while covering these in the same way.

Cover The Vehicle

Covering the vehicle with a large dust sheet or car cover will add a layer of protection around it. Much in the same way as covering the exhaust.

Using Translation Apps When In Foreign Countries

When travelling through foreign countries it is likely that you will need to talk to certain people in those countries. Those people are likely not English speakers so you are going to have communication hiccups. To quell the issue there are many language translation apps available.

Language apps are useful as they can be installed onto a phone or tablet and kept with you at all times. A good example is the iTranslate app for Apple iphones and tablets.

This app has 90+ languages included, voice output and input, dictionaries and Romanisation. An impressive suite of features that all come in useful when dealing with a foreign language.

The voice input can be used to translate your voice and transform it into text. This text is then translated into another language. This is especially useful for translating phrases and much faster than deciphering a phrase book.

Insurance > Tax > MOT

Getting a Vehicle on the Road

A common issue when getting a vehicle back on the road is sorting out the legal requirements that new vehicles must adhere to. Insurance, tax and MOT is required for all vehicles in the UK. A new vehicle has none of these (although some vehicles do not require a MOT for a number of years if it is factory new). This is where problems can arise.

In order to get an MOT a vehicle must have road tax. In order to get road tax a vehicle must be insured. So the order that they need to be obtained in is: Insurance, then road tax, then MOT.

Once a vehicle is insured and taxed it is still not road worthy unless it has an MOT. Fortunately it is legal to drive a vehicle to the MOT test centre to get one, so long as it is a direct route to the test centre.
